YESTERDAY, the Illinois House of Representatives voted 61 to 54 to pass the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act!
A majority of representatives stood on the right side of history and voted for the marriage equality bill. Send a message of thanks to Rep. Greg Harris and Speaker Madigan for their work ushering in marriage equality to Illinois.Since January, HRC has spent over $350,000 as part of the Illinois Unites for Marriage campaign, putting field and faith organizers on the ground all year long to fight for the right of gay and lesbian Illinoisans to get married. We are proud to have spent the last year working side by side with Lambda Legal, the ACLU, Freedom to Marry, Equality Illinois, The Civil Rights Agenda, and the Chicago Urban League for this success. Victories like this are ALWAYS driven by ordinary citizens – people like you. During this campaign, over 34,000 people connected directly to their legislators by phone, over 81,000 emails have been sent to representatives, and nearly 30,000 postcards were delivered, all while building visible and strong support for marriage equality among African-American clergy and other key groups. Illinois leadership need to understand how personal this victory is to you, your family, and your friends. Take a moment now to celebrate this amazing victory by thanking Rep. Greg Harris and Speaker Madigan. Thank you for all you've done, Marty Rouse National Field Director
