Aunt Martha’s opens health clinic in Hesed House center
By Stephanie Lulay slulay@stmedianetwork.com
AURORA — A new permanent clinic has opened in Hesed House’s Comprehensive Resource Center in Aurora.
The Aunt Martha’s Health and Resource Center will aim to provide medical care to the area’s homeless population and legal assistance on the population’s medical issues. The clinic began serving patients this spring.
Aunt Martha’s CEO Raul Garza said that the clinic will serve an estimated 4,000 people every year. Previously, a temporary make-shift clinic at Hesed House operated by Aunt Martha’s served 2,000 patients annually, he said.

Retaining Teachers of Color in our Public Schools

| Retaining Teachers of Color in Our Public Schools | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| A Critical Need for Action By Glenda L. Partee Teachers of color are significantly underrepresented in the public school population, despite the fact that the number of students of color is growing rapidly. Teachers of color are more likely to work and remain in high-poverty, hard-to-staff urban schools and are known to be personally committed to the success of children of color. They also serve as powerful role models for all students and prove that teaching can be a viable career for people of color. This report, the third in a series, focuses on the need to retain teachers of color—specifically, those who effectively improve student achievement. It explores reasons for low teacher retention rates and discusses promising retention policies and practices to ensure that the most capable teachers of color enter and remain in our public schools. Together, state, district, and local school leaders—as well as organized communities of color—can begin to remedy the low representation of people of color in the teaching force. Bullying Gay Adults. Have you done it?
George Takei | Guest Curator
Those of us in America often forget that the struggle for LGBT equality is worldwide. This powerful video, where people are symbolically unseen, was produced in Ireland, but the pain of the narrators is universal. I myself lived in silent fear for six decades of my life.
It is our straight friends and allies who make the true difference in the lives of those who feel silenced or, as here, invisible. See us for who we are, and help all people emerge from the shadows... Sheila Simon Promotes Healthier Options for LINK card holders.
Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon met with vendors at the Downtown Elgin Harvest Market Thursday to advocate for locally grown foods. Simon said more markets statewide should accept Link cards so all residents can access locally grown products. The Elgin Harvest Market accepts Link cards, but is in the minority of markets statewide that do. "I'm trying to promote more farmers' markets to do what's being done here in Elgin," she said. "If you're a family struggling financially, you can still get fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables into your family's diet. That's healthy for the families, it's also really healthy for the Illinois economy, so we're all winners here today thanks to the folks who organized this great farmers market in Elgin." Simon chairs the Governor's Rural Affairs Council, which is working to increase access to local foods as a way to promote healthier eating and spur economic development. She is visiting farmers' markets statewide to promote Link access. Elgin Harvest Market manager Jennifer Benson led Simon on a tour, stopping in booths to talk to vendors, including Annie Rubino of D + A Bee Yard in Carol Stream and Chris Prchal of Trogg's Hollow Veggies in Poplar Grove...

Shedding Light On Corporate Dark Money
Telling the SEC: Corporations should disclose which candidates they are donating to
The 1% want us to believe that corporations are people and money is speech. But we know better.
Right now, corporations are spending money on political campaigns and lobbyists to defund Social Security, cut education budgets, and deregulate Wall Street. In fact, some corporations spend more on politics than they do on taxes. And they are allowed to do it in secret.
Tell the SEC to require corporations to disclose their political spending.
After the Supreme Court’s appalling Citizens United ruling, exposing corp orate “dark money” should be a top priority for an agency charged with preventing corporate abuse.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the federal agency charged with preventing corporate abuse, can stop big corporations from using our retirement savings and shareholders’ investments as their secret political war chest.
Stand with us and tell the SEC to require corporations to expose the hidden influence of corporate money.
Solidarity,
- Jordan, Daniel, & the rest of the NPA team.

Pride in the name of love
President Obama just took a huge step forward in the fight for LGBT equality.
This week, pridehe proposed an executive action that would prohibit companies that receive federal contracts from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
That's because it's unthinkable that -- in 2014 -- someone could be fired for who they are or whom they love.
That's why the Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act last year, which would protect all LGBT Americans from workplace discrimination. But Speaker Boehner is blocking it in the House by refusing to take a vote.
It's Pride Month across the country -- a great time to reflect on how far we've come in the fight for equality. In just a few years, we've repealed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the Defense of Marriage Act has been struck down, and nearly half of all Americans live in states where same-sex couples can now get married.
That's progress, and it's happening whether the opposition likes it or not. We're winning, because there are millions of people like you who are out there fighting for it.
When a state legislature in Arizona voted to make it legal for businesses to refuse service to same-sex couples, people organized and the governor vetoed it. That's the kind of action we need whenever any interest group tries to turn back the clock.
In 2014, discrimination against LGBT Americans shouldn't be legal anywhere -- President Obama and a bipartisan majority in the U.S. Senate have stood up and said that.
By refusing to hold a vote on ENDA, Speaker Boehner is taking a stand, firmly on the wrong side of history.
Call him out -- add your name, and stand up against discrimination today:
Thanks,
Jon

President Obama on Student Loan Debt: "No Hardworking Young Person Should Be Priced Out of a Higher Education"
David Hudson June 09, 2014 06:59 PM EDT
On Monday, President Obama took another step to expand opportunity for all Americans, by making student loan debt more affordable and manageable to repay. The President signed a memorandum directing the Secretary of Education to propose regulations that would allow nearly 5 million federal direct student loan borrowers the opportunity to cap their student loan payments at 10 percent of their income.

Ah, Imploding Republicans!
For tea party Republicans, House leadership hopes turn into disappointment By Robert Costa June 13 at 6:46 PM
Longtime conservative activist L. Brent Bozell called several reporters late Tuesday to boast about the tea party’s stunning upset of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in Virginia’s Republican primary. When asked what he would do next, Bozell laughed and said he was going to have some more lasagna with the conservative operatives who happened to be dining at his house.
Across the Potomac River in his first-floor suite at the Capitol, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy started making calls, too — but not to the press...
