Laurie Nowak Speaks: Shining Light NFP and St. Mary's Church in West Chicago collaborate to bring a Heroin Awareness workshop

Did you know that more people are dying of drug overdose than car accidents in Du-Page? In 2013 overdose deaths were happening approximately every eight days. The time to prevent more deaths is NOW.
Shining Light seeks to develop self-reliant contributing members of society by providing educational and outreach services to individuals and families in the area. We break the cycle of poverty by taking a long-term, holistic approach with professional counseling and personal mentoring. Today, we offer workshops, classes, and support groups with a focus on: developing self-esteem, financial literacy, legal Q&A, nutrition, and job training. As part of our educational outreach, we have been hosting Heroin Awareness workshops in the area.

DPDC Welcomes
Bill Press!
Greetings!

Our keynote speaker for the Gala is Washington Insider Bill Press. A talk show host, political commentator and author, Bill Press can be heard on WCPT, Chicago's Progressive Talk, every weekday morning 5-8 am.

Mr. Press has a tremendous journalistic history appearing on several TV shows including CROSSFIRE with Geraldine Ferraro (on the left) and Pat Buchanan (later Robert Nowak) and John Sununu (on the right). He also appeared on the SPIN ROOM opposite Tucker Carlson and on BUCHANAN and PRESS on MSNBC--a show which was cancelled because both hosts were opposed to the Iraq War.

He is presently a contributor to The Huffington Post and The Hill papers and regularly attends the President's press conferences.

We are delighted to have such a progressive voice at the Gala. Bill is sure to entertain the crowd with his wit and knowledge of the Washington Scene. Nobody knows what's going on better than Bill Press.

ARE YOU QUALIFIED FOR OUR VESTED MEMBERS RECEPTION?
If you have attended the last year's Gala, will be attending the 2014 Gala and are a new or current DPDC member at the 100$ level, you qualify this year for our complimentary "members only" reception with Bill Press. Please write to arohrer@dupagedemocrats.com and let her know you qualify for this event and plan to attend. Putting "Vested Member" in the subject line is helpful!

Now is the Moment to save our postal commons

Published: Sunday 19 January 2014
For some, the postal service has become an ideological punching bag, proof that “government programs” don’t work and that the state inevitably bureaucratizes services better left to the private sector. In the case of the postal service, this narrative lacks a critical element: fidelity to truth.

As an independent agency under the umbrella of the federal government, the United States Postal Service receives little-to-no government funding; it pays for itself through sales of its stamps and services, and is only in financial trouble because of a vindictive, unfair law that forces it to fund its pensions seventy-five years into the future. As Jim Hightower points out, the postal service hasn’t taken a penny from taxpayers since 1971.
Whatever the reasons for the public's conception of the postal service as an institution weighted down by socialistic bureaucracy, current events suggest otherwise. Over the 2013 holiday season, it was a private carrier, United Parcel Service, which collapsed under the weight of demand and inefficiency. When it happened, UPS’s spokespersons and the usual gang of bourgeois media shifted into high gear in defense of the corporatist paradigm. At least one retail spokesperson said consumers shared the blame; other fluffy critics pinned the debacle on consumerism itself.
But compared to private carrier UPS, the U.S. Postal Service, READ MORE

The Gala Countdown Begins! 1/14/14
Dear Amy,

Happy New Year to all!
This month we celebrate the work of Martin Luther King who made one of his biggest (and most threatening to the establishment) moves in defense of African-Americans rights to fair and integrated housing. The struggle to override housing discrimination still goes on today.
Listen to this interesting piece on housing discrimination that appeared on This American Life last November.

Defending the middle class and everyone's right to share in the benefits of having this standard of living (previously known as the American Dream) is something at which Democrats have lead the way for decades. This is true in DuPage as well.

Please celebrate the sometimes arduous road Democrats have faced in the 40 years since we last had a spate of electoral successes in the wake of Watergate (1974) by honoring the real breakthroughs that this road has lead to finally in 2014.

More information and a ticket link for the 2014 Gala can be found here.

We look forward to celebrating with you!

$25,480.80 / hr. Rauner seeks minimum wage cut

 By Walt Zlotow

Last month GOP gubernatorial candidate, billionaire Bruce Rauner, advocated rolling back Illinois' $8.25 minimum wage to the federal minimum of $7.25. He spoke these words at a Quad Cities business group candidate forum:

"I will advocate moving the Illinois minimum wage back to the national minimum".

Since the national minimum is just $7.25 per hour, Rauner officially went on record advocating a rollback of one dollar per hour. In the 25 days since that very specific policy position, Rauner never qualified or rescinded his stance. But when faced with a firestorm of criticism over the heartlessness of further impoverishing Illinois' many thousands of minimum wage workers just trying to survive on what are rightly called starvation wages, Rauner skirted the truth.  Instead of being forthright, he said he really wants to raise the Illinois minimum wage to $10 per hour. I'm not going to describe how Rauner twisted himself into a mammoth pretzel getting from "moving the Illinois minimum wage BACK to the national minimum" of  $7.25 / hr,   to raising the Illinois wage to $10 / hr. Suffice to say his explanation doesn't pass the political smell test.

Last year Rauner earned a cool 53 mill. Based an a normal work year of 2,080 hours, that amounts to $25,480.80 an hour. Billionaire Bruce has enough 'walkin around' money to purchase nine  luxury homes and have a financial interest in three professional sports teams (Bulls, Red Sox, Steelers). He's now spending millions of his financial empire to acquire the only toy that has so far eluded him: the governorship. Unfortunately for BB, this is one toy the workin' folk of Illinois ain't selling.

GALA: 1974-2014 A Trajectory of Hope, a Legacy of Leadership

Join us Feb 22nd at the Carlisle in Lombard to CELEBRATE a 40 year trajectory--from 1974-2014--an arc that has finally bent back toward Democratic parity in DuPage. Many great folks have hung in there while we built and while the demographics and cartography shifted. Many new believers willing to put their shoulders to the wheel helped push through to electoral daylight.

Together, let us CELEBRATE NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN!

United, let us CELEBRATE the rise of the Democratic Party in DuPage and our shared commitment to uplift the middle class and provide ladders to those trying to reach it for their families.

As ONE PARTY OF HOPE, let us CELEBRATE one another's work to bring starting with the contributions of the late Tinker Harvey to our post-Nixon wins of 4 seats on the County Board to our 18 gains over the last two years.

Tinker Harvey 1924-1913

Chicago Tribune Dec 24:
Kathryn "Tinker" Harvey was a force for the Democratic Party in the traditionally Republican stronghold of DuPage County for nearly five decades, and over the years stood up on issues including women's rights, the environment and fair housing.
"Tinker Harvey worked for years to establish the Democratic Party of DuPage County," U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said in an email. "It was a hard, lonely struggle, but she approached it with determination, force of will and a caring heart - and she lived long enough to see some electoral successes."
Please read more about her incredible life HERE. Memorial service information follows.
