DuPage GOP Dishonors Lincoln with Keynote Speaker Ted Cruz

 WALT ZLOTOW, http://heartlandprogressive.blogspot.com/

It's possible the DuPage County GOP could have picked a worse political leader to keynote last Friday's Lincoln Day Dinner, but I doubt it. The honoree they picked, Sen. Ted Cruz (Rep. TX), not only looks a tad like 1950's champion demagogue, Sen. Joe McCarthy (Rep. WI), He demagogues like him, too. Cruz, who attended Harvard Law from 1992 to 1995, once told a Texas Fourth of July political rally that there were more Commie professors at Harvard than Republican professors. He then said his predecessor at Harvard Law, Barack Obama, would have made a great Harvard Law School President, since he's the most radical president in US history and making him right at home amongst those "dirty dozen" who believed in Communist overthrow of the US.  That talk resonated with Texas Tea Party faithful attending, and up in Demagogue Heaven, Tail Gunner Joe McCarthy was smiling.

But Cruz doesn't limit his demagoguery to partisan political events. At the Chuck Hagel Defense Secretary hearings, Cruz implied that Hagel accepted speaking fees from the North Koreans. This brought an unprecedented rebuke from far right Republican colleague Lindsey Graham (Rep. SC) who called Cruz's crazy talk "out of bounds".

Cruz fairs no better when not channeling McCarthy. Threatening to filibuster all reasonable gun control measures in the wake of the Newtown massacre, Cruz called the families of the victims "political props" for the Obama administration simply because they petitioned Congress to enact sensible gun legislation.

Cruz voted against Hurricane Sandy relief for blue state victims in New York and New Jersey prompting conservative Republican colleague Representative Pete King to publicly state, "He went out of his way to attack New York on the bill. There were really phony charges made against Sandy aid, and if Ted Cruz had prevailed, my constituents would be homeless." Yet, when a fertilizer plant blew away most of West, TX, Cruz he had the gall to demand Uncle Sam devote "all available resources" to help his constituents.

On immigration relief Cruz is fighting to sink bipartisan immigration reform by demanding that a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants be "taken off the table".

Just this week, Cruz broke Senate protocol by publicly trashing Republican colleagues who privately told him in closed door meetings not to threaten filibustering all gun control legislation in advance. He called them "squishes" because, after privately criticizing him, they rolled over and voted for the filibuster as well.

What nonsense Cruz will offered the DuPage GOP faithful remains to be heard. Maybe he came up with a new "birther" slam at the President. Maybe he turned the spotlight on Illinois state representative Jeanne Ives (Rep. 42) to honor her demagogic comment that "Same sex marriages are completely disordered". "They're trying to redefine society."  "They're trying to weasel their way into acceptability so that they can then start to push their agenda down into the schools, because this gives them some sort of legitimacy... And we can't allow that to happen." Maybe Cruz shared more of his private battles with Republican colleagues that are trying to tamp down his driving lust for power and self aggrandizement.

Is the DuPage GOP trying to insult the legacy of Honest Abe or are they simply tone deaf? If actor Daniel Day-Lewis donned his Oscar winning Lincoln garb and tried to gain entry this Friday, security would scrutinize his scruffy beard, non elite clothing, and obvious humanitarianism and tell him: "Get lost, pal, you're not one of us".

Hear anything about last Friday's event (we couldn't find much in the papers...hmmm). If so comment below!

Congresswoman Duckworth on failure of Massacre Prevention Gun Laws

A Message From Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth
About Me | Services|Contact Me
Dear Neighbors of the 8th District,
Rep. Duckworth with her guest for the State of the Union address, Denise Reed, a Chicago mother who lost her daughter to gun violence.

I’m deeply disappointed that the Senate recently failed to pass common sense gun reforms and I’m urging my colleagues to take up this issue again soon.
It’s time for common sense legislation that will prevent gun violence, including tragedies like Newtown. While I will continue to protect the Second Amendment rights of marksmen like myself, there are immediate steps we can take that will keep our children, schools and communities safe.
First, we need to be better at tracking the sale and purchase of guns and make sure that any loopholes around background checks are closed. I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress to keep guns out of the hands of those who have a prior criminal record or potentially threatening mental health issue.

We also need harsher penalties for those who steal guns or illegally purchase them for others. That is why I am a cosponsor of the bipartisan
Gun Trafficking Prevention Act, which makes gun trafficking a federal crime and strengthens penalties for straw purchasers, or those who purchase firearms for someone who is prohibited from owning them.
Finally, we need to limit access to weapons that can kill a large number of people in just a few seconds. Military assault weapons belong on the battlefield; not in our communities. While any proposed legislation must properly define these weapons, the Supreme Court has made it clear that reasonable limitations such as on high-capacity magazines are fully consistent with the Second Amendment.
I know that carrying a gun is a serious responsibility. It should be reserved for law-abiding Americans; not those who pose a clear danger to public safety.
I want to hear from you.Click here to share your thoughts on gun reforms.
Sincerely,

Tammy Duckworth
Member of Congress

A Blog, A Bill and A Reaction

SANDY’S LIGHTHOUSE EDITION | by Sandy Gresak

GOP vs. Mommy Blogs

Miller: NRCC tries another reboot on their image “From USA Today… House Republicans are targeting popular “mommy blog” websites in a digital ad campaign beginning Tuesday as part of an ongoing effort to repair the GOP’s image with certain voting blocs — in this case swing female voters — who have sided decisively with Democrats in recent elections. The banner ads will be featured on over 100 websites popular among women and geo-targeted to be viewed by residents in 20 Democratic-held congressional districts targeted by the GOP for 2014.

Senator Tom Cullerton’s Senate Bill 494

State Senator Tom Cullerton’s (D-Villa Park) proposal to reduce government in DuPage County passed the Senate on Thursday. This proposal gives the DuPage County Board the ability to consolidate smaller levels of local government. "It's no secret Illinois has way too many layers of government,” Cullerton said. “My goal here is to make DuPage County a leader in streamlining government, while at the same time ensuring taxpayers get quality services." Cullerton’s legislation, Senate Bill 494, allows the DuPage County Board to dissolve many appointed positions to provide taxpayers with a smaller, less costly and more efficient local government.

Senate President John Cullerton’s Reaction to Madigan’s Bill

Mr. Cullerton's spokeswoman, Rikeesha Phelon, is out with a statement reacting to the Madigan bill, and it sure looks like the fight is on between the two top Democrats. “The speaker and Cullerton have the same goal with different approaches,”the statement says. “Cullerton has worked to build consensus for a plan that is clearly constitutional. To that end he has sought to work with Republicans, members of his caucus and labor leaders.

Working Families; Beyond the Rhetoric. Do you Care?

Working Families Flexibility Act of 2013

SANDY’S LIGHTHOUSE EDITION | by Sandy Gresak

Working Families Flexibility Act – VOICE YOUR OPINION

Except for the few exceptions there is a greater percentage of us that are paid by the hour.  Republicans are once again trying to push the so-called “comp time” legislation. Translated-longer hours for less pay. This would cut the much depended overtime pay from these hourly paid workers. This bill was introduced on April 9, 2013 by Rep. Roby Martha [R-AL-2] in hopes to amend the Fair Standards Act of 1938. If you are living on a shoestring now, the attached pieces on Republican bill (H.R.1406) you need to read. Click on any of the following and open.

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD: Leave your comments on this page; contact your representatives. If you look in our blog archives for April we have a page Where I can voice my opinion, this should help with any telephone or web address you need.

The Final Push For Marriage in Illinois Starts Today

Human Rights Campaign
Marriage equality needs to move in the House.
Make sure your Representative is planning to vote "yes!"
Take Action
Dear Democratic Party of,
How are Illinois, Rhode Island, Delaware and Minnesota alike? Each of these states is in the process of voting on marriage equality. But unlike those other states, Illinois's marriage bill has not advanced. With just a month remaining in the legislative session, it's time for the Illinois House to debate the bill and vote.
Contact your representative one final time and tell them to vote YES on marriage equality.
Illinois Unites for Marriage campaign field organizers and volunteers have organized in-district rallies, gone door-to-door across the state, collected and delivered postcards, recruited for and managed nearly 200 phone banks, and had conversations with thousands of Illinoisans connecting them directly to their legislator. Moreover, dedicated supporters like you have sent tens of thousands of emails to legislators. We've all done our part. Now it's time for the Illinois legislature to vote.
On Valentine's Day the Illinois Senate passed the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act. Then, the Illinois House Executive Committee passed the bill. Illinois businesses like Groupon and Orbitz have expressed their support. Fair-minded faith leaders like Rev. Dr. Herbert Martin and Rev. Timothy Moss are so passionate about ensuring all people have the same rights that they drove three hours through a snowstorm in order to be in Springfield to testify for the bill.
Send one last email to your legislator and make sure they will vote yes when the marriage bill is called to a vote.
I've been honored to represent HRC on the ground in Illinois since January, creating and managing a field team of 15 skilled organizers. Our investment of staff, computers, phones, and direct financial contribution could not have been put to any better use than it has been here in Illinois. Working with Equality Illinois, ACLU, Lambda Legal and Freedom to Marry we have created a strong field campaign. I know that because of the work done in the past four months by staff and volunteers across the Land of Lincoln, and all of the work done in the years prior to this legislative session, marriage equality will become a reality in Illinois before the end of May. You will help make it so.
Thank you,
Lynne Bowman

A mother's fight against GMO's

GMO – Problem or Progress?
Story #3 / Tid-Bits of News

SANDY’S LIGHTHOUSE EDITION | by Sandy Gresak

A MOTHER’S FIGHT AGAINST GMO...

Diana Reeves, of Connecticut, mother of three, formed GMO Free USA. GMO - genetically modified crop soy.

Diana walked away from her job at an accounting firm, when her son was diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, he passed away before he turned 5 years old. Diana said “she never looked back”.

Diana became extremely angry when the state of Connecticut did not pass the GMO labeling law. She felt that the lawmakers response to the voters, who expressed overwhelming support for this law, “oh well” was not acceptable.

Diana lost her son, and had two daughters who also had medical issues. So she started looking into the connection between food and health. She discovered the potential hazards of GMO. A friend introduced her to NonGMO Hartford, which led to her involvement with the Connecticut Right to Know group. She joined in distributing information and campaigning for HB5117, which included the provision for mandatory GMO labeling. Everyone was sure this bill would pass, and when it didn’t, Diana knew more had to be done. Hence, GMO free USA.

Diana believed the state legislators caved due to a lawsuit from Monsanto. And, she was not going to do the same. She was determined to continue to keep the fight for transparency in GMO ingredients alive, and plans to take it nationally.

GMO free USA plans to pressure food manufacturers into revealing which of their products contain GMO. Diana’s goal is to organize national boycotts of manufacturers that will not switch to non-GMO ingredients.

My information on Diana Reeves is from the website of Organic Consumers Association, in a article written by Katherine Paul, June 13, 2012.

If you would like to read more on Diana Reeves you can do so at: www.organicconsumers.org  Also, If you are interested, there is a link to “Label it if it’s GMO” on their home page.
