Dear DuPage Democrat,
You've probably seen the news: over 900 Utah couples have gotten married in recent weeks after a federal judge there ruled the state's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.
This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court stopped same-sex marriages.
Today's news is a bitter reminder that there are two Americas: one where full equality is a reality and another where even the most basic protections are non-existent.
For a few beautiful weeks, Utah couples got to feel what it was like on the other side of that line. It was a dream come true for hundreds of loving families.
Now, as we wait for the next court ruling, marriage equality is a dream deferred.
These brave couples have set an incredible example in Utah, and we must stand with them.
The joy these couples celebrated as they joined in marriage captured the heart of an entire nation.
And though today that joy has been put on hold, we know that it won't be long until every couple in the state – and every corner of our country – will enjoy full marriage equality.
We cannot stop working toward that day. While this decision takes us one step backward, we won't stop marching forward, one state at a time, toward a future where justice is served.
We will not rest until where you live is not a barrier to basic fairness.
Since this morning, every day that passes will be another day in which same-sex couples and their children in Utah, as in 32 other states, must suffer as second-class citizens.
Thank you for standing up for these couples, and all couples who deserve nothing less than true equality.
Sincerely,
Chad Griffin President
