Dear Neighbors of the 8th
District,
I’m deeply disappointed that the Senate recently failed to pass common sense gun reforms and I’m urging my colleagues to take up this issue again soon. It’s time for common sense legislation that will prevent gun violence, including tragedies like Newtown. While I will continue to protect the Second Amendment rights of marksmen like myself, there are immediate steps we can take that will keep our children, schools and communities safe.
First, we need to be better at
tracking the sale and purchase of guns and make sure that any loopholes
around background checks are closed. I will continue working with my
colleagues in Congress to keep guns out of the hands of
those who have a prior criminal record or potentially threatening mental
health issue.
We also need harsher penalties for those who steal guns or illegally purchase them for others. That is why I am a cosponsor of the bipartisan Gun Trafficking Prevention Act, which makes gun trafficking a federal crime and strengthens penalties for straw purchasers, or those who purchase firearms for someone who is prohibited from owning them.
Finally, we need to limit access
to weapons that can kill a large number of people in just a few seconds.
Military assault weapons belong on the battlefield; not in our
communities. While any proposed legislation must properly define these
weapons, the Supreme Court has made it clear that reasonable limitations
such as on high-capacity magazines are fully consistent with the Second
Amendment.
I know that carrying a gun is a
serious responsibility. It should be reserved for law-abiding Americans;
not those who pose a clear danger to public safety.
