Tell the FDA: No BPA in food packaging

The FDA decides March 31st!

The science is clear. BPA is dangerous. It's time for FDA to stop allowing BPA to be used in our food packaging. Send a message to the FDA before its March 31st decision.

The FDA decides March 31st!
CREDO Action | more than a network, a movement.
Dear Daniel,
The toxic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) was recently banned in California from being used in baby bottles and sippy cups.
But thanks to the lobbying of the American Chemistry Council and other chemical manufacturers, BPA continues to be allowed in food and beverage packaging including the lining in most canned food and soup.
The FDA can put a stop to it. The agency will decide on March 31st whether or not to continue allowing bisphenol A (BPA) to be used in food packaging. It needs to stand up to industry pressure and protect us from this dangerous chemical.
BPA is a hormone disruptor that has been linked to a long list of serious health issues, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, early puberty, miscarriages and brain and heart disorders.1
It's so ubiquitous, it's even used in things like store receipts and plastic bags, and it is estimated that BPA can be found in 90% of our bodies.2
FDA's deadline comes in response to a formal petition filed in 2008 by the Natural Resources Defence Council. FDA failed to respond, and finally in December, a federal judge said it must make a final decision on BPA in food packaging by March 31st.3
Early last year, FDA admitted that BPA use raised "some concern," reversing a long maintained position that BPA was safe in low doses, as evidence mounted rapidly of BPA's health risks, which in addition to increased propensity for some diseases, include infertility and behavioral problems in children.
The science on BPA is clear, and its health impacts are far reaching, and deeply concerning. BPA isn't safe to be used in food packaging and the FDA needs to take action to protect us from BPA:

Fixing our broken eavesdropping law

From the ACLU

Protect First Amendment Rights

Dear ACLU Supporter,
The drumbeat for reform has been relentless. The momentum is building. In recent months, a number of developments have come together to create conditions for fixing our state’s broken eavesdropping law – specifically the provision that allows for civilians to be arrested and prosecuted (for a felony) if they audio record a police officer doing his or her duty in a public place.

Tell your state representative: No one should be arrested for audio recording a police officer in public.

The ACLU of Illinois is challenging this law in federal court because it violates our First Amendment rights to speech and petition and because it makes Illinois an outlier among other states. In recent months, two Illinois state courts have ruled this part of the eavesdropping law is unconstitutional. Now, the Illinois House is set to consider House Bill 3944, sponsored by State Representative Elaine Nekritz, to permit the audio recording of police officers engaged in their public duties in a public place. The bill passed out of Committee in February and now is poised to be voted on by the full House at any time!

We need to keep up the pressure to change this law: Contact your state representative today.

Sincerely,

Allie Carter

99% Training in Aurora, April 14; Prep for Tax Day rallies

You could be a part of a huge wave of progressive direct action this spring. Learn how to practice nonviolence in the spirit of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. at a 99% Spring action training in Aurora on Saturday, Apr. 14, 2012, at 10:00 AM. Click here to join in:

Attend a Training
Dear MoveOn member,
America has a long history of everyday people standing up for justice by taking courageous direct action—from the great Flint sit-down strike, to the bus boycotts and lunch counter sit-ins of the civil rights movement, to last year's protests in Wisconsin and at Occupy Wall Street.
But these courageous social justice leaders didn't just know what to do—they were trained in how to take direct action. This spring, MoveOn members and our allies are organizing these trainings at a scale never seen before. You should join in!
We're coming together from every corner of our movement to provide in-depth direct action training to 100,000 people from April 9 to 15. The goal is to pave the way for a 99% Spring filled with a huge wave of progressive direct action nationwide. Some of the best trainers in the country have been working for weeks to put together a powerful interactive training experience and the folks who've already participated say it's electrifying.
You'll pick up crucial action skills that are hard to come by, work with your neighbors to dream up alternatives to an economy that's leaving most of us behind, and work together to organize powerful actions to directly take on the 1%.
There's a training in Aurora on Saturday, Apr. 14, 2012, at 10:00 AM, can you join in?
Our movement will be holding huge rallies in every major city on Tax Day to call out the 1% who refuse to pay their fair share. We'll be gathering massive crowds to confront CEOs and top executives at annual shareholder meetings of Wall Street banks, dirty energy polluters, and corporations that refuse to treat workers fairly. And we'll be doing everything we can to call out the corrupting influence of corporate money on our elections.
At the training in Aurora, you'll get prepared to take part in these bold actions and to build connections with other progressives who want to see a 99% Spring in America.
We'll practice telling the story of what happened to our economy and what a different future could look like, we'll learn the history of nonviolent direct action, and we'll train and plan to take direct action ourselves—in the footsteps of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.—to win change.
By the end of the training we'll be ready to join the legacy of people using direct action to transform the political landscape in this country.
Will you join the 99% Spring action training in Aurora on Saturday, Apr. 14, 2012, at 10:00 AM?
Thanks for all you do.

Pick Up the Clean Energy PACE

From the Sierra Club

View a web version of this email.
Sierra Club - Explore, enjoy and protect the planet

Dear Friend,
Two years ago, the Federal Housing Finance Authority (FHFA) derailed a program that allowed homeowners to put solar panels on their roofs and invest in energy-efficiency without having to take a personal loan. Right now, FHFA is taking public feedback on this program - but we only have one week left to show that we stand with clean energy.

The program -- called PACE or Property Assessed Clean Energy -- was in full force in over 20 states until FHFA deemed it too risky. This decision conflicts with the 27 states that believe local PACE programs are a good investment.  However, we can bring PACE back with your help.

Tell FHFA you want to be able to invest in clean energy and energy-efficiency in your home.

So where does the money come from? The PACE program allows homeowners to agree to a property tax increase to pay for renewable energy installations and energy-efficiency improvements. This small increase is less than the anticipated utility bill savings, so it's a win-win-win. Energy savings, cost savings, and a cozier home! If you sell your home before the project is paid for, the tax is passed on to the new homeowner who will continue to reap the benefits.

Tell FHFA to bring back PACE because it makes clean energy and home energy-efficiency improvements affordable.

PACE also brings an economic shot in the arm to our communities. Within the first year, the Boulder County, CO PACE program created 120 jobs, brought $20 million in overall economic activity, and reduced homeowner's energy use by $125,000.1 What if you could do the same for your community?

Now is the time to reinstate a common-sense program to help homeowners save money and create local jobs!

Sincerely,

Mary Anne Hitt
