Congrats to all the candidates--from Precinct Committeemen to Congressional candidates!

Gathering signatures can be both a fulfilling and draining task but it is truly the bedrock of constituent contact. In this day of electronic-everything, showing up at someone's door to ask them a small favor in the name of Democracy is, if I dare go out on a limb here, a sacred activity. Every year, I hear someone say that they were the first political person, according to the occupant, who had ever knocked on their door. Those "first knocks" help change our political climate and our country.

Congratulations again to every one who knocked these last 3 months!

8 Ways to a Better Holiday Season

I know how crazy people feel right now and the last thing you want to hear about is how productive people do what they do. Well, I skimmed a Yahoo Shine article online and thought I could condense it into something digestible that wouldn't make anyone feel like ONE MORE "should" had been piled on their plate!

Here is the Readers' Digest version of the 8 things that will help you feel more productive and, likely, more sane this season.

Whether you work from home, have a desk or are running around in your car:

1) Take breaks. The article recommends a book called "The Power of Slow" by Christine Hohlbaum.
2) Reset your mood. If the day is starting out rough, take 5 minutes to reset yourself with a small ritual or breathing technique.
3) Eat light, healthy foods at several intervals instead of a heavy lunch.
4) Have a flexible To-Do list; accept that plans get changed (even an airplane en route is off course much of the time).
5) Use technology with intent: set personal email and surfing limits.
6) Balance workload doing minor organizational tasks in small chunks in between intensive work blocks.
7) Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
8) Say no to whiners, complainers and distracting people (wear headphones if you have to!). As a matter of fact, when my kids wanted to whine on and on about something, that is exactly what I did while singing full volume to my favorite tune (probably can't do that in your cubicle, but the theory is sound).

3) within 90 days, the President shall transmit to Congress a plan with a timetable and completion date for the accelerated transition of all military and security operations in Afghanistan to the Government of Afghanistan.

Maggie Daley: In Memoriam by Robert Peickert

Too often do we fail to recognize or acknowledge the accomplishments of people until that person leaves us. For 22 years as the First Lady of the City of Chicago, Maggie Daley devoted her time and energy to the disadvantaged, the disabled and the less fortunate. From her work with after-school programs for kids in Chicago to her recent work with those who suffer from cancer, Maggie spent those 22 years as an individual who wanted to make a difference in the lives of those who needed help.

After a day of work, Maggie didn't go home to think of her accomplishments that day, she thought about what more needed to be done. She avoided having the spotlight on herself so that it could be focused on those who needed help. We may never know the poignant details of her life as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother but that was Maggie. That's the way she wanted it.


Thanks Maggie. Our thoughts and thanks go out to the Daley family for sharing Maggie with the rest of the fortunate world!

Unity Event A Huge Success; Covered by Channel 7

Last night, Novemeber 20th, the Democratic Party of DuPage County stuffed nearly 300 people into Monty's Banquet Hall in Bensenville to celebrate Democratic Unity.

The pre-primary event was exciting and novel enough to be covered by Channel 7 News. New members of the organization who had never attended a DPDC event were enticed by the unity theme. A highlight of the evening was the opportunity to hear from the tremendous panel of candidates we have in the five congressional districts that are now part of DuPage County (IL 5, 6, 8, 11 and 14). Each of the congressional candidates had three minutes to speak about why it is important for Democrats to stand together.

Occupy Chicago protestors don't blame the President for the current economic situation but also don't believe he is doing all he can to fix it. This is among findings of a recent survey of Occupy Chicago protestors conducted by Benedictine University. The survey also revealed that protestors may not have a formal agenda, but do indeed have a concrete list of grievances. Was the American Dream Hijacked by 40 Years of Super Rich Control?

I have a long-term interest in big picture trends. I believe it is impossible to evaluate short-term policy in government without understanding the tides of history. I think we all sense that somewhere, our body politic went off the rails. I had more opportunity and a better life than my parents and grandparents. I fear our children will have it much harder and much worse. I believe that fear is shared by many.

A couple of weeks ago, Dr. Jeffrey Winters from Northwestern University, spoke on his new book, American Oligarchs on WBEZ’s Worldview. You can listen to this fascinating discussion at http://www.wbez.org/worldview/2011-10-28. He explains how the super rich, for their personal benefit, have controlled our politics in the last 40 years. He makes it very clear that money interests have railroaded our democracy. Most voters fail to realize their perspective is manipulated by the super rich money interests for the benefit of very few rich people. This 2012 election fight will be extraordinary. I’ve come to believe it is for the soul of America and saving the American Dream. It is the most important election of my lifetime. 

Please read and listen to what Dr. Winters has to say. I hope he motivates all of us to set aside our differences and work hard to win seats for progressive Democrats. Pass this information on. I think your neighbors are looking for answers. These are the answers to where we went wrong and how to get back on track.

You Can Keep DuPage Non-Profits Healthy. Here's How.

Dear Friends,

Are you aware of the distressed state of not-for-profit service agencies in DuPage? I volunteer at several of these agencies; I can tell you it is getting really tough.

The DuPage Board strategy shifts the burden of service and cost to the non-profit community. The County gets to keep financial reserves high and excellent personal pay and pensions by cutting financial support to non-profits with no need to share the pain.

The Naperville Sun (link below) reported on increased demand and reduced resources for health services for our neediest friends and neighbors.  If we let Republicans win the Presidency, the Congress, and state and local offices, their recovery plan is to reduce funding for the least of those among us and protect the wealthy and corporations. Government is supposed to work for the common good. Their strategy doesn’t.

We need to insure Democrats win the 2012 elections, or DuPage could look like a third world country. We must fight for the progressive values we share.  The DuPage lifestyle that brought us here will become a memory if we do nothing. Be more active in the coming year.  Ask others to help. Invite them to Democrat meetings. Get involved in local races and volunteer to make phone calls and pass out literature. Be an advocate for the candidates you support.  Look for places to help.  Don’t wait for a phone call.  Our children’s future depends on it.

Take it with a pound of salt, or maybe two. But a new poll commissioned by Washington Democrats shows four incumbent Republican congressmen from Illinois in some political trouble.

The poll sponsored by the House Majority PAC found that only 42% of those surveyed in the north suburban 10th District want to re-elect Winnetka's Robert Dold, and 50% want a change. Just 35% have a favorable opinion of Republicans in Congress.

The numbers are similar with U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert, R-Hinsdale: 52% want a new congressman. But the figures are south of there for Reps. Tim Johnson of Sidney, who gets a 33% re-elect, and Bobby Schilling of Moline, at 39%.

The survey of roughly 600 voters in each of the districts was conducted by Public Policy Polling. The firm generally works for Democrats and left-of-center groups. But it also has a reputation of calling it the way it sees it, for instance recently reporting that embattled Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican, has significantly boosted his odds of surviving any recall move.

Perhaps more significant, this poll comes after a series of others by other organizations that show Democrats have taken a small lead over Republicans nationally on a generic "who should run Congress?" survey.

Like Overtime Pay, Minimum Wage, Women's Vote? Thank Democrats

So today we're being told that Obama's healthcare plan is losing support. Well, let's remember, at least HE HAD ONE. As a matter of fact, many, if not most, of the ideas that have made our country great came from the Democratic side of the aisle, even if not as whole cloth at first.

Let's commit a short list of these to memory for the next time someone starts being snide about politics and Democrats in particular. Maybe they have even benefited from one or two of these programs:

• Women's Suffrage Amendment
• Securities and Exchange Act
• Social Security Act
• Unemployment compensation
• Rural Electrification Act
• Federal Home Loan Program
• Minimum Wage
• Overtime

As we discovered in 2008 when we elected Barack Obama by double digits in DuPage (the formerly bloody red heart of America), our strength is in our unity. As we watch the Republicans claw at each other for the dubious position of running against the President, we see how unproductive, nay DESTRUCTIVE, that kind of carping is to the fabric of the party. While I am happy to have them continue that kind of behavior ad infinitum, we know a better way.

On Sunday, Nov 20th, Democrats in DuPage will show that, with civility, we can contend for the rights to run for office even among our Democratic peers. Yes, there may be a contrast of ideas from which voters can choose, but negative swiping just produces a disenfranchised, disgusted mass of non-voters.

High-Speed Rail Public Meetings Set for Next Week

Illinois Department of Transportation has set public meetings on high-speed rail between St. Louis and Chicago. All meetings are from 4 to 7 p.m. (come and go).

* Joliet: Tuesday, Oct. 25; Jacob Henry Mansion, Victorian Ballroom, 15 S. Richards St.

* Bloomington:  Thursday, Oct. 27: Double Tree Hotel, 10 Brickyard Drive

* Carlinville: Wednesday, Nov. 2; Blackburn College, Woodson Center, 700 College Ave.

The public meetings regard drafting of an environmental impact statement for the Chicago - St. Louis corridor. This environmental impact statement deals with double tracking the Union Pacific Railroad south of Joliet and making other improvements north of Joliet to reduce transit times.  The goal for this project is a four hour trip time, with 9 daily round-trips.  The planning for 220-mph trains, which will result in a 2 hour trip, is being handled separately.

It is very important that we show our support for the State's high-speed rail program. Please consider attending one of the meetings listed above. There will be an opportunity at the meetings for you to make a statement expressing your support.

Biggert Mailing Twists Facts about Obama Medicare Plan

Judy Biggert's recent mailing claiming the administration's plan will "balance the budget on the backs of seniors" is, not surprisingly, based on distortions. Biggert's mailing is based on projections made by the conservative American Action Network. The assumptions have been disputed by many organizations, as reported August 4 by FactCheck.org.

Congresswoman Biggert encourages constituents to call her. So, do it! Call her and tell her to stop relying on dubious reports from organizations with an axe to grind. Tell her to stop twisting the truth. Here's her number: 1-866-644-5729. 

Occupy Naperville Holding Protest Saturday, October 22. That's tomorrow!

Will You Make A Difference? You Can This Saturday

This Saturday, Giving DuPage, Whole Foods Market and the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce are joining forces to help make a difference for a number of local non-profit organizations. Bring your donations to the Naperville Whole Foods at 75th and Route 59 beginning at 9 am. Members of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce will be loading the donations onto trucks. DPDC Debuts Campaign Strategy Committee

This is a frenzied time of year when everyone is running around getting signatures for as many candidates as they can. For that fall energy, we offer our great appreciation!

Nonetheless, in reality, the Democratic Party of DuPage County must husband their resources as wisely as possible, putting the most resources toward the races most likely to be "contenders," as Marlon Brando would say. That is why, for the first time, we have a Campaign Strategy Committee, headed by Greg Hose.

Of course, everyone has an opinion about whom they would like to see win--or be defeated--but not every race is equal regardless of how deep the feelings run in favor of or against a particular candidate. If you have an idea or concern about the candidate(s) in a particular race, give us a call and we will get you in touch with the CSC. In the meantime, thank you for all you are doing to get Dem candidates on the ballot and if you know anyone who would still like to run, there are nearly two months left to gather necessary signatures, so have them contact us as well.

Rich Miller of Capitol Fax weighs in on Axlerod and the 8th Congressional race

DuPage Chairman Cronin Insinuates Election Commission Problematic

A "miscommunication” is being blamed for the DuPage Election Commission missing a deadline to submit information to the county about the way it operates. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin gave two dozen independent boards and commissions that he appoints until Friday, September 30 to submit copies of their budgets, ethics policies, personnel policies, bylaws and other documents. On Monday morning, October 3, Cronin issued a statement expressing his displeasure over the fact that the election commission and the North Westmont Fire Protection District both missed the deadline.

“We've asked for very basic information that should be readily available to anyone,” Cronin said. “Their failure to comply — or even respond to the request — raises more questions than it answers.” But by the afternoon, the election commission's Executive Director Bob Saar said the reason the information wasn't sent was a “miscommunication” with his staff before he went out of town. “They thought I wanted to review it,” Saar said. “I told them that I didn't. They will have it in to the chairman by the end of the day.” Saar said the election commission welcomes the review by Cronin, which was prompted by financial scandals involving the DuPage Housing Authority and the DuPage Water Commission.”

Chicago "Occupy" Group at Forefront in Issuing Demands

While Occupy Wall Street has gotten a lot of publicity, it has been criticized for being slim on demands. Chicago's spinoff organization, appropriately named "Occupy Chicago," is among the first of the "Occupy" groups to produce a list of demands. DuPage Dems Attend Indo-American Democratic Organization Dinner

Sunday September 25th, members of the DPDC including the Chair, Bob Peickert, and the Executive Director, Amy Rohrer, attended the 32nd Annual Indo-American Democratic Organization Dinner at the North Shore Holiday Inn in Skokie.

This is the second year we have attended to honor the growing community of Indian and Pakistani Americans who have heard and heeded the Democratic message in DuPage and Chicago. We have an Indian-American candidate, Raja Krishnamoorthi, in the 8th Congressional District, which now falls largely in DuPage County and is a sure winner in the fall because the Republican opponent is an unknown entity. The district’s incumbent, Joe Walsh, has chosen to run in another district and has a Republican challenger there.

Hinsdale Central Students Help out DuPage Democrats!

Mr. Postman! Deliver this letter to Rick Perry!

Dear Gov. Perry,

I have been contributing a small portion of my earnings into Social Security since 1961. Even then, this 16-year-old understood Social Security was a savior to millions of Americans since 1935, when working people literally died from being destitute in a heartless society ravaged by the Great Depression. I realized that while I may not be that needy fifty years down the road, it was comforting to know that it would be there for me, my family, friends; indeed, all my follow workers.

After 50 years of contributing, I began receiving a monthly Social Security check that I know is secure until at least 2037, and on to forever with just a modest effort by wise leaders. It is tragic that you choose not to possess the wisdom to qualify as one of those potential leaders.

Governor, even though Uncle Sam is keeping score on how much I've contributed, I am not. If I drop dead tomorrow, recovering barely a pittance of what I've contributed, it concerns me not the least. My excess contributions will go toward benefiting all workers by keeping the system solvent. That is called protecting The Commons, a concept you apparently have been unable to grasp in all your 61 years.

You may double down on your ludicrous charge that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme all you want. It clearly demonstrates that while your last name is not Ponzi, your Presidential candidacy is merely a scheme . . .designed to take from the needy to further enrich the already rich.

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky's husband, Bob Creamer, strategist and author, weighs in on Obama's JOBS speech

President Obama's speech to Congress reset the political battle lines and put Progressives back on the offensive.

The speech included provisions that Republicans in Congress may actually agree to pass -- like continuing the payroll tax holiday that if allowed to lapse would affect the paychecks of virtually every American worker. But it also made the case for bold initiatives to rebuild America's infrastructure and directly create jobs through a teacher corps and youth jobs program. These bolder proposals are critically necessary to jump start the economy, and Obama is betting -- correctly -- that if they fail to support them, Republicans will pay a political price next year.

What was needed was a package of proposals that were bold, projected urgency, and will create jobs now. The president delivered.

I'm The Same Me I've Always Been; An American Muslim On 9/11 Legacy

No doubt September 11 changed the attitudes and lives of most Americans, but for me—and many like me—it was a change unlike that of the common American. On September 11, 2001, I learned what it means to feel truly sick to my stomach. My insides felt as if they were being wrung dry and the acids in my belly were ready to spill over and out of my mouth. I can pinpoint when that gut-wrenching sensation occurred within me; it was exactly when I realized the first tower fell.

As my nausea began to overwhelm me, I felt an intense throbbing in my heart and the sensation of brain combustion at the next thought that crept into my head. “Please, God, please,” I thought. “Let this not be an act brought on by Muslims.”

Why, you wonder, did I think that, of all things, at that moment of indelible historical significance? Because I am an American Muslim—one whose life has changed since 9/11/01.

Since that day, I am no longer considered all the things I always was and, in my heart, always will be. The majority of Americans no longer see me for who I truly am. I can no longer be seen as patriotic, or trustworthy, or even normal. My actions and intentions are scrutinized and questioned. My modest dress is now a statement of defiance against America or a symbol of suppression when, in fact, it is neither. It’s the same me I have always been.

I can no longer attend an Independence Day parade without being the target of vile stares and snide remarks, when all I want to do is celebrate the birthday of my homeland. It’s the same me I have always been.

I can’t go shopping with my daughter at the local mall without having at least one person shake their head in disgust upon seeing us . . .but it’s the same me I have always been.

I feel the pain and anger that most do about what took place on 9/11, in fact maybe more than most. After all, I was born in NY—and those two towers were representative of my native land. The symbols of my birthplace no longer exist. The thousands of people who lost their lives that day were my people. They were my fellow New Yorkers, my fellow Americans, and my fellow brothers and sisters in humanity.

I feel a deep connection to the intense loss of the people of NYC yet few can understand that. I feel not just anger towards the murderers of 9/11 but I also feel resentment. Not only did they kill so many innocent people, they have put me and thousands of other America Muslims in a hellish place where we are always fighting to prove ourselves and our love for our country. My children, who are third generation Americans, are going to be viewed through a different lens because of those heinous acts.

We, the American Muslims, are struggling. Struggling to live our lives in a normal manner in a most abnormal situation. Striving to be Americans, yet being viewed as un-American or, worse yet, anti-American. Yet, there is nothing further from the truth. It’s me—the same me I have always been—a proud American Muslim.

Maybe it’s because I’m a teacher, but I just can’t let ignorance go unchecked. Recently, a rant about the Pledge of Allegiance has been making the Facebook rounds, claiming that children are not allowed to say the Pledge. Well, that is just not true. In fact, most of the court cases that involve the Pledge were brought to protect a child’s right NOT to say it.

I hear “nearly half of Americans didn’t pay income tax.” That’s because many of those people don’t have enough money to tax. Others, mostly middle class families (defined as a family of four living on $50,000) used their legal deductions, available to everyone, and tax credits available to the unemployed, to lower their liability. They still paid into Medicare and Social Security.

One of my favorites is “Medicare is free.” Do these people look at their pay stubs? My husband paid into Medicare for nearly 50 years, but our insurance bill increased when he went on Medicare this year. How is that free?

Frequently when I counter ignorance with fact, I hear, “Well, you know more about it than I do.” Good. Then, they start turning to me for my take on the issues. Better. Often, they change their minds. Best.

Too many Americans are too uninformed about the issues. Get informed. Speak up. Be your community’s oracle.

DPDC Supports Senator Bernie Sanders Re-election; Tickets On Sale Now for September 17 Fundraiser

DPDC Chair Bob Peickert was asked by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ campaign to serve on the Host Committee for a fundraiser for Senator Sanders to be held Saturday, September 17 in Evanston.

Senator Sanders was elected as an Independent in 2006 but caucuses with the Democratic Party. Mr. Sanders received the endorsement of Senator Chuck Schumer, Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. He was also endorsed by Senator Harry Reid, Governor Howard Dean and then-Senator Barack Obama, who campaigned for him in Vermont.

Senator Sanders is a frequent guest on WCPT and on MSNBC. He is an outspoken supporter of single-payer health care, Social Security and Medicare and is a strong voice for the working class. In December of 2010, he gave an 8 1/2 hour speech in opposition to the extension of the Bush Tax Cuts for the wealthy.

We hope to have Senator Sanders as our keynote speaker at our February Gala, and we hope to send him a message by having a good showing at his fundraiser. Several of us will be attending on behalf of the Democratic Party of DuPage County. Everyone is asked to purchase his own ticket. The DPDC will not be funding this event. What does MLK have to do with Labor Day?

The MLK Memorial celebration scheduled for the weekend of August 27-28 was canceled due to Hurricane Irene sweeping through the DC area.

On thinking of Dr. King, it occurred to me that his last effort prior to his death, and the reason he was in Memphis, was to support workers and the unions. He was to give a speech to workers the evening he was assassinated in 1968.

Dr. King was the second hero of social justice to fall after President Kennedy, and two months later in June, Robert Kennedy. Living through that time and remembering now is extremely painful.

Our heroes have fallen and we believe there are no new heroes on the horizon. However, think of the senators in Wisconsin who would not give up the fight for their rights and for the rights of others. They are heroes. They sparked a fire within the people of Wisconsin to fight for what they believe in for the common worker.

We are the new heroes. We must speak out and be heard for social justice and economic justice. We cannot sit by and not take action when we know the soul of the country is at stake. Even the smallest action can be meaningful. Those of us who go about our business every day think we cannot make a difference against those most powerful, but witness those whose lives are spent caring for others and are the true heroes of the day. You know them, they are in your lives, and they are and can be you.

World Series Comes to Western Suburbs! Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association hosts 35th Annual Gay Softball World Series

This week, the 35th North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA) Gay Softball World Series, the world's largest GLBT athletic event, is being played right here in the western suburbs. Many of the games will be played in Elmhurst and a few in Schaumburg. You can get all the details here.

The suburbs provide an excellent venue for the games, as noted in the Daily Herald, which reported, “There just are not enough quality fields in the city of Chicago to handle the (size of this) tournament and that would meet (NAGAAA) requirements.”

Created in 1977, NAGAAA is a nonprofit international sports organization comprised of men and women dedicated to promoting organized softball competition for the gay and lesbian community. Currently, more than 680 teams in 37 leagues across North America make up the 10,000+ members of NAGAAA. Teams representing these leagues participate in the NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series (GSWS), hosted each year in a different member city.

This is a great event for DuPage County. It's nice to see DuPage recognized for its parks and fields. I'm also very excited to give a warm welcome to our LGBT World Series competitors. We hope you find our community inviting and we'll be cheering you on!

VAN (Voter Activation Network) or VOTE-BUILDER: This is the data system we use to track and contact voters. It is a magnificent tool provided by the ILDCCA and the DNC to avoid re-inventing the wheel every election cycle which makes it easier to build electoral momentum.

ILDCCA (Illinois Democratic County Chairmens Association): This is our big brother, headquartered out of Springfield, and the group that sponsors the yearly brunch we attend prior to the State Fair. We appreciate all the tools they provide.

DNC: Inventor of the VAN, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has recently joined their database with NGP (I don't even remember what that means!) to really boost its outreach power. The merger added better campaign functions as well as consumer data and other predictors of voter leanings. This is especially helpful in uncovering likely Dem non-primary voters. Here is a good explanation of the merger and its value to us and the party.

Give Your Favorite Cause A Boost

Do you volunteer your time for a worthy cause? (In addition to the DPDC, of course.) Many of us spend valuable free time helping organizations like PADS, Giving DuPage, Habitat for Humanity, Humanitarian Service Project, Peoples Resource Center and others.

Think about the organizations that matter to you and let us know who they are. We’re planning a number of activities with the groups I mention and we’re excited to know more about the ones you support. So, let us know who they are

By growing relationships with these organizations we can get the word out that DuPage Democrats care about the community so don't forget to wear a DPDC t-shirt whenever you volunteer.
